The Best Walks in Leeds City Centre

Taking a proper break during your working day isn’t just a nice to have – it’s a proven way to improve focus, mood and energy levels. One of the best things about working in Leeds city centre is how quickly you can swap your screen for a healthy dose of fresh air, green space and waterside wandering, even within a short lunch break.

If you’re based at Wellington Place, you’re perfectly placed to make the most of the city’s public spaces and walking routes. From canal-side strolls to hidden gardens, these are some of the best walks in Leeds city centre – all starting and finishing at Wellington Place and doable within around an hour.

Leeds & Liverpool Canal & Granary Wharf Loop

Walking by the water is scientifically proven to reduce stress levels, and a wander down the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is one of the most popular lunchtime walks for Wellington Place workers. Head out of Wellington Place and walk towards the waterfront, crossing over the River Aire to join the canal path.

From there, it’s a leisurely stroll along flat paths, passing the canal’s resident swans Sid and Nancy (and their current brood of goslings if you’re lucky), alongside red-brick mills and waterside views. When you reach Granary Wharf, you can complete the route back through the city centre, or simply turn back to maximise your time by the water.
Duration: 30 to 45 minutes.
Why we love it: It’s a guaranteed mental reset, right on our doorstep.

Park Square & City Loop

Set off from Wellington Place and turn left onto Queen Street and you’ll soon find yourself in Park Square – one of Leeds’ most overlooked green spaces. It’s around a 10-minute walk from Wellington Place, leaving you plenty of time to pause on a quiet bench or patch of grass, enjoy a packed lunch, flick through a few pages of your latest book or simply soak up some fresh air before heading back.

You can retrace your steps straight back, or extend your walk slightly for a short city centre loop before returning. If you fancy a little reward when you get back, grabbing a coffee and a sweet treat from Wellington Place residents Bean Coffee makes for a perfect afternoon pick-me-up – it’s a mocha and an almond croissant, for us.

Duration: 25 to 35 minutes.
Why we love it: It’s a brilliant way to rediscover a hidden pocket of calm in the middle of the city.

Leeds Station to South Bank

This route fits nicely into a longer lunch break and showcases some of Leeds’ most exciting regeneration projects. Walk down Wellington Street towards Leeds Station, then loop onto Neville Street and head towards the River Aire. You’ll pass Granary Wharf before cutting across Holbeck and into the South Bank, where new developments, public art and independent spaces are constantly redefining the landscape.

You’ll pass old-school pubs, breweries and some brilliant street art – plenty of excuses to pause for a photo or two. Follow Water Lane until it meets Springwell Road, then loop back via Whitehall and over the water, finishing back at Wellington Place.

Duration: Around an hour.
Why we love it: It’s a great snapshot of regeneration in action.

Woodhouse Moor

If you’ve got a little more flexibility, this longer walk takes you northwest through the city streets and up to Woodhouse Moor for a bigger hit of green space. From Wellington Place, head along Wellington Street, turn onto Bingley Street past the Highland Laddie, then follow Belle Vue Road north towards the park.

Once you reach the Moor, you can explore its pathways at your own pace, before looping back via the rear of Leeds University Business School, down Clarendon Road and onto Great George Street. At roughly 5km, it’s ideal if you fancy upping the pace and turning your lunch break into a steady jog.

Duration: Over an hour.
Why we love it: It’s a proper escape from the city – perfect when you’ve got time to roam.
