People of Wellington Place: Ahmed Mohammed

Wellington Place is more than just bricks and mortar, it’s a thriving community powered by people. This series of interviews aims to highlight some of the people of Wellington Place, share their inspirational stories and find out why Wellington Place is much more than just a place to work…

Interview with Ahmed Mohammed, Weekday Officer at 2 Wellington Place

For the past 7 years Ahmed has been the front desk officer at 2 Wellington Place, helping to ensure the smooth running of the development each day. Working closely with other team members on the site, Ahmed is a crucial component for keeping Wellington Place secure and at its best.

Tell us a little bit about what you do…

I am currently the Weekday Officer at 2 Wellington Place.

My job role varies widely from day to day. My main role is being the first point of contact for visitors and staff, and I work closely with the building management (CBRE) and on-site contractors.

I work alongside Lucy (our Concierge) and we make sure that the building is running smoothly, reporting any issues to the appropriate person and using CCTV to keep the site and building secure.

I spend most of my day helping people with whatever they need to make their day better!

What is your biggest passion?

I’ve had an interest in contact sport since an early age – it’s been a lifelong passion of mine. I have trained in White Crane Kung Fu, mixed martial arts and also boxing.

I used to live in Iraq, and whilst there, Salah Abdulla, who at the time was the number one fighter in all of the Middle East, personally trained me!

I have also participated in competitions across Iraq and Britain. Through my love of the sport, I was able to meet boxing legends Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno! I am still interested in contact sports and I now do Thai boxing at my local gym and participate in local sparring matches. I also love to run and do so 3-4 times a week!

Tell us something exciting that most people don’t know about you?

Before I moved to Britain, I served in the Iraqi police force for over five years. Working in the police force was extremely challenging and rewarding, but unfortunately, I had to give up my job due to safety reasons.

Since moving to the UK in 2000, I have had various jobs – I’ve worked in a bakery, supermarket and now security.

What is your favourite thing about working at Wellington Place and why?

I absolutely love being a member of the Wellington Place team! I enjoy the strong ethos of being part of a team and I find it’s more like a large family because we’re all so close.

When we have a really busy day on-site and the team comes together to deliver excellent service to hit all of our goals, it is really rewarding to know we achieved it together.

Which community events do you take part in at Wellington Place and why?

Being part of the security team means that I am always in some way involved in the events that happen on-site.

I often help to get the estate ready for food vendors or help to raise money for charity. We always support the excellent Poppy Appeal at Wellington Place to help those who have served our country.

What three words sum up Wellington Place to you?

  • Diverse – I love the diversity of the companies that we have on site. People come from all over the world and from all areas of life – you never know who you will meet!
  • Friendly – Wellington Place is such a friendly and welcoming site to work at and visit.
  • Unique – There is no other site like Wellington Place in Leeds. What we offer to our occupiers in terms of service, public realm and events, is first class, and it makes Wellington Place the place to be for occupiers and for me.

Thanks to Ahmed for taking part in the interview.
